Genius!! August 13, 2010 Pumpkin28 After years and years of having eggs that were raw or too hard to dip my soldiers in, my mother-in-law bought me one of these!! It is amazing! perfect soft bolied eggs everytime for me!
Egg sized for easy storage and works quite well August 1, 2010 R. Willis (London) I assumed that this device would be egg shaped (all around), but it is actually flat on the base. This leaves the face (pictured) always facing upwards.
I have an egg holder, which stops the eggs bouncing around when boiling and this device also fits in the pockets.
I live in LONDON so will be vigilant of any change due to Hard Water, but after 3 uses, can see no visible change. Obviously this may change in time (if so I will update).
I tend to add a little salt to the water when boiling eggs, so am careful to wash the device when finished.
The red colour changes to opaque white, as it indicates timings, which are easy to read through boiling water. The red is not quite as vibrant as in the picture, more of a vermillion, but still effective to indicate temperature change.
The indicator lines for HARD on the one I received, is almost the centre of the device, which unlike the pictorials on the packaging, means that all red has gone to indicate HARD boiled. But this is a minor difference.
I imagine that this device is engineered for `medium' sized eggs, which makes sense as the size of device is proportional.
I normally buy large eggs, but have quickly discovered that waiting until the colour change is a little passed the line, will make up for size difference. Stands to reason, really.
If you have enough time, it also works to turn the heat off and leave large eggs for an extra period in the cooling water. You will need to judge the period yourself, corresponding with the size of the egg.
I would imagine that by this method, this device could also work for duck eggs, though I have not tried this yet.
A very useful kitchen gadget and at this price quite a bargain!
spot on egg timer July 23, 2010 Daisy Forget uncooked or rock hard boiled eggs, no more problems, this little device takes the guessing away --- result --- the 'perfect' egg for everyone.
Does exactly what you'd expect July 16, 2010 Mighty Zoltar I've never really known how to boil an egg properly. 3 minutes is apparently the right time from what I remember, but is that with the eggs going in cold or boiling water?
This clver little device removes the need to work out how long your eggs need. Just put it in the pan with your eggs, regardless of water temperature, and just monitor the the timer for the increasing dark patch. When it reads how you want your eggs, you're done, and you get exactly what you wanted.
The only small issue with this timer is actually seeing it within a pan full of bubbles and a simmering surface. It can take a bit of squinting and a face closer to the pan that you like to see where the reading is sometimes.
Useless piece of kit. July 10, 2010 Sheila Armstrong (great britain.) I am so fed up with this useless item.
I thought the colour changed !!
All i got was a steamed up lump of smelly plastic, and hard boiled eggs.
I shall stick to my trusty egg timer.
