Loving It !!! September 5, 2010 Jane 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I love paper books, the feel of the pages and being able to see how far to the chapter end etc, so I wondered if I would really like the Kindle... It arrived yesterday all powered up and ready to use. It was amazingly simple, I had bought a number of ebooks in advance and just had to enter the password for my wireless internet at home and all the books were downloaded in seconds. I love using it and will definitely be reading more now. Amazon do the cheapest ebooks and everything I could possibly want is available and at good prices. The Kindle is amazingly slim, slimmer than it appears on the website and the quality of the screen is superb and easy on the eye and page turns are instant. I also like that I can change the text size depending on whether I have my contacts in or not. I have found the Kindle easy to navigate and use without once having to look at the instructions. A great facility is being able to download samples of books. Since yesterday I have downloaded samples of books I would not usually have bought and found I really enjoyed them and have bought the books. I would highly recommend this to anyone fed up with lugging around big heavy books. It is marvelous.

Excellent product September 5, 2010 D. J. Wilson (Lancashire, England) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I ordered the 3G version on the first day it was on pre-order. It arrived on the day after release and it was extremely easy to set up. Take it out of the box, plug it into the mains using the charging cable and plug provided and wait. I gave it two hours, though it was showing a green light after 90 minutes. There is no difficulty in these steps thanks to the short installation guide and the message on the front of the kindle.
After charging, switch on and the familiar (especially if you have Kindle for PC) logo appears and the Kindle sets itself up. A progress bar lets you know that something is happening. It then goes to the home page and quickly locked on to the Vodaphone signal. I only got GPRS despite Vodaphone's claim that I should get a 3G signal inside (it did change to 3G out back). That's not a problem though, GPRS is perfectly sufficient to log on to Whispernet and to access your books, assuming you have already bought some.
If you have not sent the books to your kindle, they still appear in Archived Items and can easily be downloaded from there. Setting up access to my wifi was straightforward, it searched for my network and found it, all I had to do was to enter my password. Again the short guide is quite clear on how to do this.
I have had my kindle for just over a week, so I have a fair user experience, but obviously no one has a long term experience of the kindle 3. For its primary purpose as an ebook reader it is fantastic. The screen is amazingly clear and has excellent contrast. It's much better than the usual LCD screen found on computers and mobile devices. I read my kindle in bright sunlight on the lawn with no problems at all, I tried using Kindle for PC on my netbook and got nowhere. Buying in the Kindle Store is also very easy and straightfoward and the book quickly appears on the Home Page.
Page turn is easy using the pairs of buttons on either side and the basic controls are good, though I did find I hit the 'Back' button by accident in trying to get to the 5 way controller a couple of times.
Having the book remember where you left off, even if you have changed books and then gone back is great. And the usability and quality of display are also very good. The kindle is light, and ways no more that a thick paperback, and even less than many hardbacks.
Many media reviewers have used the iPad as a comparison. Ignore such comparisons completely. The kindle is intended as an ebook reader, anything over that is a bonus. It is not and will not work adequately as an internet tablet, not least because of its monochrome only display. That is great for ebooks but not for web sites.
You can transfer and read PDF files on the kindle. All I transferred worked well but one.
The kindle has a number of experimental features, and these should be treated as 'experimental' Text to speech seemed to work well on the User Manual, but it's not really something I would use and the MP3 playback is also something that I don't see to be particularly useful, why not just use your existing MP3 player? The browser has attracted a lot of attention and it's the first thing I tried. I didn't expect much so I wasn't too disappointed. It is slow, difficult if you need to enter text, such as username and password, let alone writing emails and worst of all it crashes the kindle if it comes across sites it doesn't like). As an emergency or trying to save roaming charges whilst abroad this may be acceptable but even an average 3G mobile phone will easily out perform it and not crash.
I've discounted this side of the kindle. If it were being sold with this as a a key part of the kindle experience, then it would lose at least one star, if not two.
The kindle has been criticised for lack of epub compatibility and limiting you to Amazon. Using a free and easily found program (see the Kindle forum here on Amazon) you can easily convert epub format books and I've done that very successfully. However it only works with non DRM books. So there are some that you cannont convert. Buying an alternative locks you OUT of Amazon's kindle store and that has the largest selection of ebooks by far. Many of the free ebook sites provide downloads in mobi format, so you can use other suppliers directly in order to get books for the kindle.
Required improvements - do something about the web browser crashing please and also please supply some UK authors, for the 'screen savers' It's exceptionally annoying to find a huge bias to US authors who are mainly second rate in comparison.
Simply The Best September 5, 2010 Frodo (England) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I already own a Sony Touch reader, which is fantastic. I held off a Kindle until this edition came out. It makes the Sony seem like a house brick. Page turning is instant, clarity of print is perfect - but its real trick is the ability to download books in seconds. Yes the Sony has a wider range of places you can buy books from, but Amazon has for a long time been at the top of its game for books and it seems like the Kindle has access to all of them. Also anybody who is looking at an e reader but worried about the technical side should worry no more, switch on the kindle it links to your Amazon account automatically purchase your book, that is it no computer involvment this is heaven !
Love my Kindle and the experimental features. September 5, 2010 Jennifer B. Mccall 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have now had my Kindle for 2 days and I keep finding things to make me love it even more.
I have just transferred a couple of albums to my Kindle (which was really easy) and I amazed at the quality of the sound. The speakers are fantastic. When buying my Kindle the MP3 feature wasn't a selling point for me but I am glad to have it in case my phone and MP3 player die and I need my daily dose of the Smiths.
I am impressed with the experimental browser as well however the text to speech feature does need work.
All in all this product has surpassed my expectations and I am super happy.
If you haven't bought one yet do it now. You will not regret it for a second. The e-ink screen is incredible and you hardly notice that you are not reading an actual book.
