Great bike, good price, but heavy and a bugger to assemble! June 16, 2008 Mr. R. S. Neal (England) Firstly, I think it should have been pointed out more clearly by Amazon/the seller the level of assembly required. I know nothing about bike assembly and so the bike sat in the garage unused for days. I'd naievely assumed it would come, (more or less), fully assembled. At least I had thought it would come with a decent step by step guide. The instructions are there for those who are already familiar with bike building; i.e. shops like Motor World, Halfords etc. For the uninitiated there are gaps where they assume knowledge. They say insert handle bars where they mean to say 'unscrew the thread holding the black piece of plastic at the end of handlebar assembly. Remove the metal wedge from the black piece of plastic. Now discard the black piece of plastic, (there to protect the end from damage in transit). Then screw wedge back onto the handle bar end, (though not too tight), and insert in bike frame. Tighten screw so that the wedge tightens inside the bike frame to hold the handle bars in place and straight'. It doesn't even include a list of parts and what they are for. I didn't realise at first that there were 2 legnths of seat post and was trying to work out what the second one was for!? Seems stupid now, but when you have what looks like a significant piece left it's easy to assume you've missed something out. Personally I find the short post far too short and am only 5" 10'. Was struggling into work until I raised the seat so that my feet just reached the floor. Instantly knocked 3 mins off my time! In the end I looked up the manufacturer of the bike on the net, found a number and called them for advice. It was all so simple when explained. If only they'd included some decent instructions in the first place. To be fair the service manager agreed and was very helpful the 3/4 times I needed to ring them. I did find better instructions from the net which allowed me to reasonably set up the front disc brake. Mainly by adjusting the distance of the pad from the brake. However, I had no idea how to adjust the chain correctly so in the end took it down to Motor World to have them check it out. An extra 15 but worth it for piece of mind especially to check the brake set up. Surprisingly the front brake had been near perfectly set up: more luck than judgement I think. I've been using this bike to cycle to work every day for the last 2 weeks, (14 miles there and back), and have been happy with it. It's hard work uphills but I'm not sure how much is down to the bikes weight, (20KG), and how much down to my lack of fitness and stamina. I Do have a problem with the gears slipping out but I'm guessing it's because the chain has stretched a little and needs further adjustment. As pointed out it is heavy. However, not too heavy that I can't carry it with one hand at shoulder height so that I can carry it up and over a railway bridge on my way to work. For the money I have no complaints apart from the poor instructions. I'm saving myself 10 a week on bus fair/petrol, and am getting fit at the same time. Plus it's a great hobby one which I would like to expand by joining a bike club. Took this bike around the local fields with no problem. Have lived in the same town for 23 years and this is the first time I've really seen beyond the centre/suburbs. Forget how close the countryside really is!
Great Bike May 18, 2008 Yikes (UK) Arrived really quickly, assembly was straght forward, looks great, great value for money. I recommend it.
Excellent bike - no complaints! May 16, 2008 T. G. H. Parry (Wiltshire) It arrived on time and I delegated my son to put it together which he did in about 90 minutes. I have ridden it several times and it takes me back 30 years to when I was a lad! You meet different people out on your bike. I am thrilled with it and at the price it was great value. My wife now wants a bike which we are about to order through Amazon. Don't be shy buy one
Mountain Bike Weight May 11, 2008 Chris (Ripon, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This bike is listed at 24 kilograms boxed!! Think carefully, that is nearly 53 pounds in weight so unboxed you have a 50lb bike to heave around. Weight is more important than rear suspension and unless the bike is under 30lbs don't bother 'cause you will never get up those hills anyway. A top quality hard-tail mountain bike will weigh 24lbs not 24kgs. Rear sus should still not take it much over 30lbs or about 14kgs. Cheers
Good Bike Good Money May 1, 2008 Mr. Guy Bill (Shropshire UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First of all I need to point this out i know most of you havn't heard of Java bikes same here didn't know who they where at all but took a risk with this bike when it came in the box it was made by the popular and expensive bike company known as Falcon they have just stuck a taky make on it to make the bike cheaper. The bike has full suspension forks and full back suspension which is very convinient if you are using this bike for anything like rough downhilling. The bike has good brakes and good frame wich is very light allowing you not to pedel as hard whilst going up hills, the seat isnt anything special its not a gel usage its plain normal seat yet can be changed for 20pounds for a more advanced one. This is a brilliant bike and i would recomend this to anyone looking for a budget bike great value, although their where two minor downsides to it: 1) Nightmare to build took 3hours max for me to build but is worth it! 2) The grip on the handlebars are poorly desighned as their are little bump in them wich can make it slightly uncomfortable to ride but i suppose you pay for what you get!!! Overall this is a brilliat bike and YOU NEED IT! UPDATE: RUBBISH had it for 1 week broke on me the gears went into the spokes of the bikes and broke them also its hard to get u hills and when i tried taking it over jumps the front folks gave away oh yeah such quality ha yea right! Score: 4.5/5.0
