Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
This is the second version of A TOWN LIKE ALICE made for T.V and starring Bryan Brown and Helen Morse. The film is approx.5 hours 3minutes long and was available on 3 different formats. The most common was the 3 tape box set but issued mostly on the American NTSC system. Also issued was the 2 tape set and a single tape which is on long play.Never released onto DVD this was a very collectable video at one time. Filmed in Australia the picture quality lacks sharpness and is quite a light film. Still one of the best war/love stories to come out of Australia and must rank amongst the best.

I watched this version on TV while living in England. Not being able a few years back to get it on DVD, I just got hold of the film starring Peter Finch and Co.
I just DO NOT understand why that version is still available for sale (or is it because they haven't been able to sell all the copies sofar?).
The TV Version is so much better and, from what I read, so very much asked for ; what are the marketing people waiting for ?
Regards

the book was one of the first novels I have read in English while studying in UK and loved the story. Now I really want to see this on dvd as the previous movie was not royal to the original story (I was really disappointed by the end of it, not anything about their re-union, their life in AU)

Why the hang up putting this 5 star masterpiece on DVD? I have the VHS tapes I've lovingly replayed over the years, would give a whoopee to have it preserved on DVD, please.

I sincerely agree with the other reviewers. Would add: in spite of their extreme hardships under Japanese control of Malasia. the Japanese guard and the Malasian chief who helps Jean, the unselfish love of Jean's lawyer after, and Jean and Joe reuniting in Australia, in each are tender events overcoming heart-rending adversity.

It's Jean and Joe's true story but oh so much more.

My well-used VHS tape of the 1981 version finally bit the dust, and I find now it has never been placed on DVD. This miniseries is a treasure, and a wonderfully accurate adaptation of Shute's 1950 book (only with his rather open prejudices against Malayan and eastern cultures replaced with Jean's clear respect for those differences, as seen through her eyes in this series). You can almost smell the cooking fires and feel the heat of the sun beating down, and the raw courage of people whose personal World War II battles remained too little known in the aftermath of that war, and are becoming even more forgotten today. Shute based his story on an actual encounter with a Dutch woman who survived such an ordeal among a group of women and children "prisoners of war," according to him with the same grace so evidenced by Jean's character. Jean's subsequent encounter with 1950's Australian outback life, romance, and healing is unsentimental yet wonderfully uplifting to watch. That story deserves to be made accessible again on DVD!

The book is very good and quite a romantic story set in harsh times. Although the movie of the fifties is quite good, I find this Australian production even better. It would be great to have it on DVD suitable for various regions, so that we all can enjoy this excellent aussie classic. I did ask the ABC shops, they knew the story, but it was not in stock, or available in any form.
