Amazon.co.uk Review
Based on the book by John Boyne, The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas didn’t really get the box office recognition it deserves on its theatrical release, struggling to find a foothold amidst a stampede of blockbusters. But this is a film that, surely, is ripe for discovery on DVD.

Directed with care and diligence by Mark Herman, whose CV includes the excellent Brassed Off! and Little Voice, The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas is set during the Second World War, in and around a Nazi concentration camp. It tells its tale through the eyes of two young boys. One is the son of the camp’s commandant, while the other is wearing the striped pyjamas of the title.

The two boys meet and ultimately befriend one another, and The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas tells the difficult story of their companionship. It does it extremely well, too, careful to understate proceedings and demonstrate a restraint that serves the subject matter well. It’s also quite a lean film, and one boasting excellent performances, including David Thewlis as the aforementioned commandant.

If The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas has a problem or two, they pale in comparison to its strengths. For this is a tightly directed, moving film, that does real justice to the terrific book it’s derived from. It’s not always an easy watch, but it's very memorable.--Jon Foster

3 out of 5 stars Underwhelming, despite the good acting by the two boys   July 24, 2010

After reading many good reviews for "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas", I had high expectations for this film. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to those expectations.

Why not? Well, from the very first scene to the end of the film, if it weren't for the uniforms and subject matter, it could have been set in the heart of England. Not a German accent anywhere, with very English accents, some quite "plummy", instead.

On top of that, the lighting and directing were such that there was no atmosphere whatsoever, with just one nasty character to some of the malice that was otherwise missing.

It's a shame, because this could have been a really powerful film that would stick in people's memories in the way that Schindler's List does. Despite the basic story being good, and the performances by the two boys being very good, the failings in this film meant that it just wasn't gripping. Even at the end, there were no tears anywhere in the room. Done better, there would have been floods.

3 out of 5 stars A bit boring   July 2, 2010

I saw this film but have decided not to buy it because I would not be able to watch it frequently. The film has good acting. I liked all the characters but the story is very weak, as a previous comment has said.

5 out of 5 stars heart breaking and beautiful   June 16, 2010

I didn't go to see this film at the cinema, nor did I read the book but after learning about the holocaust and ww2 in history we watched the movie in our lesson.

In a class of twenty five students and a teacher, I don't think there was anyone in the class that wasn't crying.

Instead of telling the story through a textbook or through the eyes of a adult this film/book shows the story of the holocaust through the eyes of a innocent eight year old German boy who finds himself uprooted from his very comfortable and popular life in Berlin. Bruno moves from the city into the countryside with his father a Nazi soldier, his mother a house wife and twelve year old sister who soon falls ill to Nazi propaganda. Bruno is a very adventurer's boy who enjoys exploring and when he sees a farm with other children in he cannot resist having a look even though this goes exactly against what his mother has said. Soon after he finds the "farm" Bruno discovers that it is not a farm but a concentration camp, however through the eyes of a eight year old child this doesn't mean anything. bruno soon makes a friend called shimal a Jewish boy of the same age, in spite of Bruno's entire nation hating shimals beliefs they soon become best friends and when shimals father goes missing Bruno cannot not help the young boy find his father, this is however a big mistake and leads to a tragic end that will make anyone cry.

This is one of the most emotional films I have ever seen. It illustrates how Nazi propaganda worked so well and how the innocence of children will stop them falling foul to the prejudice of there parents and how nothing could stop them being friends.

I recieved this film very fast and efficiently, though the film would not play on my dvd player.
I have never had this problem before;
Could you reply to me with possible satisfaction to get this working?

Tom
